From La
Rhune one can see for miles as this nearly 3,000 feet
massive formation overlooks Navarra and Lapurdi.
From Sare to Ascain,
the views to the south are dominated by this large sacred
mountain. From afar this natural edifice hides many remnants
of history; dolmens and cromlechs (both man-made rock
forms). Many people from witches and paupers of long ago
to the prosperous Empress Eugenie of Montijo (wife of
Napoleon III), have visited its flanks. One need only take
a trip to its crest to truly appreciate the same panoramic
vistas that people for centuries have enjoyed.
Eunate's Roman chapel
is one of the many stops along the trail of Saint-Jacques
de Compostelle. Completely isolated in the countryside,
octagonal in design it is surrounded by an eight-sided
enclousure featuring a bell tower at its pinnacle. It
is believed that long ago the chapel was used for funeral
services of those who died during their pilgrimage or
nearby hospital.
Ciga,
on the left, the lovely town in the valley of Baztan perched
on a hill.
On right, you see a beautiful
view of the cathedral of Guetaria.
