DANCERS AND KLIKA

By Jo Frances Ansolabehere

The Kern County Basque dancers have been dancing for approximately 18 years. Currently they are under the leadership of Mrs. Bernard (Jeannie) Arduain and Mrs. Jose (Mayie) Maritorena. Since organizing they have performed in Fresno, Los Banos, Los Angeles, Colorado as well as for many local organizations such as the Museum Benefit, the Elks Club, Sacred Heart Church, various schools and many social organizations.
This group is self supporting even though they are sponsored by The Kern County Basque Club. They buy and maintain their own uniforms. The usual practice is a donation by the organization for which they perform to the Basque Club. This money is then used for their transportation, dinner expenses, etc. Musician for the group has been Mrs. Jean (Jeannette) Arrayet.

Avid promoter of the KLIKA was Charles Moutrousteguy. He purchased and donated seven bugles to the group. All instruments were imported from France as the American bugles have an entirely different sound.
We hope you will enjoy them and realize as we do that with great pride we take another step toward a complete Basque culture in Kern County.
