The
film HARD COUNTRY is filmed at the KCBC in 1980.
Released in 1981 starring Daryl Hannah, Kim Basinger, Jan-Michael
Vincent, & Tanya Tucker.
Vincent plays a contented Texan, happy
with his beer and girlfriend. Basinger, the girlfriend is
bored with her life. She is reunited with her girlfriend who
is now a successful country singer. This film has lots of
fights and funny bits, but it ends up happy.
Filming went on for a full month. Since
the film takes place in Texas, 4000 bottles of Texas Lone
Star beer is shipped to the film location. President Marcel
Membrede recalls driving through Bakersfield in director David
Greene's Mercedes as they talk about the movie. Our clubhouse's
interior was transformed into a dark western saloon featuring
a horseshoe-shaped bar. During the filming Marcel, Amedee
and other board members often participated. During one filming
session an actual saloon fight broke out. It was originally
believed that the fight was brought on by many drunk film
extras. The rental amount paid
by the film studio added a much needed $10,000 into the club's
coffers.
